From my time in Japan, I am used to taking off the outside shoes when entering a house. This made sense, especially if the house was carpeted as was the case there, in my experience.
They operate slightly different here. Whereas in Japan, you take off external footwear in the porch, here you can wear your shoes in the hallway/common area, but not in your room apparently.
This doesn't make much since to me in our gaffe anyway, because as you can see from the pic of our humble abode above, the floors are tiled (some bedrooms have parquet floors) and are easily cleaned.
I have decided to go with Mayo shoe etiquette in my own room, but I have to respect other people's floors! Herself almost has a fit when I forget and stroll in to her room! Well if it's not that, it would be something else anyway!
