Following on from my post on old age pensions (or lack of same!) here, I found another reason why income tax is so low here. There is no dole, rent allowance, free medical card, fuel vouchers, shoe vouchers, emergency money etc! If you don’t work, you live al fresco!! The only thing on offer here is $10,000 (€5000) off your mortgage for each kid you have (government apartments only). No wonder you don’t see any asylum seekers here!!!!!! Still, they might be taking things too far here. Saw a relatively young “scavenger” hitting the food court in a commando raid the other day, eating leftovers. Not a pleasant sight.
You have to wonder if Ireland has gone too far the other way though. There’s no excuse for not having a job in Ireland now. With all the benefits people lose however, they’d nearly need €50,000 and a company car to make the job worth it! Nothing like the fear of being hungry or homeless to get a lazy git off the couch though!
