I was used to it in Japan years ago to seeing all sorts of bad/funny/unusual English on products/signs etc. Indeed there was an email flying around with copious examples a few years back.
It doesn't really happen here, because English is the main language for communication. However, you do get it on stuff imported from other countries round about here. My current favourite is from an Indonesian natural remedy - it claims that it will "dissipate sputum".
Don'y know why, but I think that's a marvellous phrase!
